In 1950, Apostle Campbell was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and moved his family to Washington, DC. He joined the Bible Way Church, where he and his wife received salvation. A proactive, purpose-driven man, Apostle Campbell began to work fervently in the church, ushering and visiting the prisons and hospitals, as well as attending street meetings. As he was proven faithful in the work of the ministry, Bishop Smallwood E. Williams sent Apostle Campbell to Danville to start his ministry.

No stranger to God’s process, Apostle Campbell started his ministry in a field in Danville with his wife and partner in ministry, First Lady Gloria Campbell. He preached for months in a tent until it became too cold to stay outside, never gaining one member — but he didn’t give up. He preached the Word as though he was preaching to thousands. Apostle Campbell was determined to see lives changed, souls saved, and people moved from darkness into God’s marvelous light. Believing in the unlimited power of God, Apostle Campbell was not afraid to take on this challenge that was “larger than life.”

Always reaching out to help others, he enthusiastically embraced the Civil Rights Movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and leading marches in Danville. Yet he still found time to minister to the youth; to “train them up in the way that they should go…”

Apostle Campbell orchestrated the efforts of all of the saints to pull together, working diligently to get a building of their own. There were many great things that took place in that building on Grant Street; souls were saved and baptized, lives were changed, and the congregation began to grow, but Apostle Campbell didn’t stop there. Through his unlimited vision and leadership they built the beautiful, state-of-the-art Bible Way Cathedral.

Apostle Campbell served as the Chief Apostle and Presiding Bishop of the Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ from 1998-2006, leading over 300 churches in the United States, England, Africa and the Caribbean. Apostle Campbell currently serves as the Presiding Bishop of the Virginia State Diocese, a position he has served in since 1974.
